Help With Phonics

Help With Phonics Video

Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. It runs alongside other teaching methods such as Guided Reading and Shared Reading to help children develop all the other vital reading skills and hopefully give them a real love of reading.

Throughout the school, Teachers and Teaching Assistants are currently following the Read Write Inc programme to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of phonics. Depending on children’s ability level in reading, teachers plan & teach certain phonic phases (1-6) which contain different sounds.

As a whole school, we feel that it is important that children practise their phonics at school as well as home to develop their skills in reading and writing.

This video shows you how to pronounce the 44 phonemes of the English Language in a pure way in order to help children to hear the sounds in words so aid their blending (combining parts of words to form a word) for reading and segmenting (opposite to blending) for spelling.

It shows children and adults pronouncing all the sounds and then linking these to Read Write Inc. Speed Sounds Cards which have mnemonics to aid memory.
